The National Benchmark Tests (NBT) measure your academic readiness for University. Some South African universities use the NBTs in addition to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) for access to higher education, while others use the tests to determine the kind of learning support a student will need during their studies.

There are two NBTs:

  • The Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy Domains (AQL) are combined into one multiple-choice test. Each section is timed for a total of 3 hours of writing time. The AQL test is written by applicants to all programs.
  • The second test is Mathematics (MAT), written by applicants for which mathematics is a requirement (e.g. Health Sciences, Engineering, and Accounting). The MAT test is also multiple choice and timed for a total of 3 hours of writing time
  • Students taking both the AQL and MAT test must write both tests on the same day

Registrations are made on the NBT website - www.nbt.ac.za. Click on "book a test" and follow the prompts. The NBTs can be written online or at a physical venue near you. At the end of the registration, you will be given the option to download or print the registration confirmation. Your NBT reference number will be on the statement.  Your NBT reference number is your EasyPay reference number against which you make payment.
